The Bank of America Model Train Gallery features an exquisitely detailed HO Scale model train layout of Baltimore City as well as an exhibit visually exploring the various North American model train scales (or gauges).
Baltimore City Model Train Layout
This HO Scale model layout is a representation of Baltimore in 1997, featuring many landmarks significant to the history of both the city and the railroad. Produced by renowned model layout designer Jeff Springer of Custom Model Railroads, this display was designed with exceptional attention to detail. The trains travel from the Inner Harbor, through downtown Baltimore, and north across the city through the suburbs and into the surrounding counties. On this journey, you will find both familiar and new local points of interest and historic railroading sites along the way.
Model Trains: Made to Scale
Model railroading requires great precision. In modeling, just like on the railroad itself, gauge is defined as the inside distance between the two rails. Scale describes the relationship between the size of the model and its full-scale counterpart. On the largest end, G Scale models are used mostly in outdoor displays. HO Scale models are the most popular choice due to their manageable size. Z Scale models, the smallest, are less than an inch wide. Displayed here are standard North American model scale sizes alongside a full-scale outline of streamlined diesel locomotive.
